Germinal (FR)

In Germinal, we meet four individuals who create their own world from scratch. They see the empty stage as a fertile place where anything can be created. Along the way they encounter fundamental issues which are absurd, funny and thought-provoking. These individuals are neither people nor actors – before they discover that they can think for themselves. By conveying their thoughts to each other, they discover communication, and together they form a micro-society.

Antoine Defoort and Halory Goerger combine visual art and performance, information sciences, the humanities and the social sciences in their work. The format of their presentations alternates between lectures, performances and fiction. Over the last few years they have gained recognition for their productions.

In Germinal the wheel is reinvented, but this leads to questions about almost everything. All things have to be tested, from the laws of physics to the basis for social interaction. And this is done within the relatively narrow confines of an empty stage. If we had the opportunity to start from scratch, even in a small room, how would we do it?

This is theatre about theatre. As Ibsen did in his time, Germinal is a production that contributes to the development and renewal of the performing arts.
