When The Master Builder was performed in China, it created an eruption of Ibsen fever. This was due to the fact that the principal roles of Solness and Hilda Wangel were played by two of China’s most renowned and award-winning actors of stage and screen, both of whom were extremely well received in their performances. In his interpretation of The Master Builder, director Lin Zhaohua demonstrates that simple effects in a stripped-down form are able to accentuate the complexity of Ibsen’s piece. He is regarded as one of China’s most outstanding directors and presents a performance with a European-inspired and powerfully contemporary expression.
