The Spanish opera director Calixto Bieito has produced a breathtaking new version of Brand with a star cast of actors from the National theatre and a mixed choir of twelve singers.

Of all Ibsen’s works, Brand created the greatest sensation when it first appeared. It was an artistic revolution that sprang from Ibsen’s personal confrontation with his past and his country. Calixto Bieito’s objective as producer was to follow Ibsen’s intentions, but to reconstruct the drama within the cultural, political and aesthetic framework of modern reality.
This is a co-production between the Bergen International Festival and Nationaltheatret, and shows what two major national institutions can achieve together.
