Little Eyolf

With Little Eyolf , world famous Swedish director and playwright Lars Norén makes his Ibsen debut

Little Eyolf
In-house Production

Directed by Lars Norén / Svenska Riksteatern

Alfred and Rita Allmers have neglected their disabled son for years. After a deeply upsetting experience during a mountain hike, Alfred has decided to sacrifice himself for his son – as his father, not his educator. Rita, who wants to live exclusively for love, experiences her son drawing her husband away from her. When Eyolf drowns, Rita and Alfred are forced to confront each other, and their own feelings.

A fascinated Norén has chosen one of Ibsen’s least performed plays to “cut Ibsen’s beard off, to leave only the skeleton”. In this production, where he is also the scenographer, he strikes to the core of Ibsen’s text, to the core of human relations: who do they really love? Who caused their child’s disability? “While most Ibsen plays have one or two characters that are more important than the others”, Norén says, “all four central characters of Little Eyolf are equally important. I want to follow all four into their crisis.”

«Worryingly current.» Vårt Land
«Norén’s Little Eyolf plays like sober poetry.” Dagsavisen
«A Swedish-Norwegian Ibsen in shades of grey becomes tight, human drama.» Aftenposten
