Henrik Ibsen and Rome

Ibsen + Michelangelo 4 ever? A theatrical video installation, a collaboration between the National Theatre and the National Museum.

Henrik Ibsen and Rome
In-house Production

Directed by Eirik Stubø

When Ibsen arrived in Rome from Christiania at 36, something happened to him. But what? And why? Like everyone entering the Eternal City, he gorged himself on arts and culture, sun, heat, and certainly wine. And like everyone else he experienced the powerful presence of the late Renaissance – in the city’s architecture, sculptures, fountains, churches, and paintings.

Beneath Michelangelo’s dome in St. Peter’s Basilica, Ibsen one day made a few drastic decisions that would alter the direction of his life. But what happened? Encountering Michelangelo’s Moses and two slave sculptures in the National Museum, two actors from the National Theatre search for answers.
