Hedda Tesman may be one of the most complex characters in world literature: the uncompromising general’s daughter making a fatal compromise, the passionate woman entering a loveless marriage, det intensely vital individual choosing death, both for herself and the man she truly loves.

The Hedda character has fascinated directors and actors for over a hundred years, and Hedda Gabler remains, alongside A Doll’s House, Ibsen’s most frequently staged play. By playing the titular character in this year’s production, Petronella Barker joins a long line of strong Hedda interpreters – Isabelle Huppert and Cate Blanchett among the recent examples. In recent years, Barker has made her mark with roles such as Tekla in Creditors, the Wife in Blood Wedding, and Mrs Sørby in The Wild Duck.
